Boat Classes

ALBACOREThe Albacore is the largest boat sailed at Winsford Flash. Although normally a two-person boat, it can have three crew. Due to its construction it is light for its size and is easy to manage out of the water. Albacores were originally built from laminated and moulded plywood but are also available in glass fibre

COMET
Although Comets have only recently been adopted by W.F.S.C. they have rapidly become one of our largest and most competitive fleets.
Comets are a modern glass fibre one-person dinghy with a single mainsail and a roomy cockpit.
Class Captain: Dave Harrison

ENTERPRISEThe Enterprise is one of the most popular traditional two-person, race sailing dinghies. Most have been built from marine plywood, but there are GRP versions available.
The Enterprise is a relatively simple design, but has good performance. The foresail is quite small compared to the mainsail and can be managed by lighter crews.
Class Captain: Phil Duggan

GP 14
The GP 14 is well-established class boat at Winsford Flash. Like the Enterprise, GP's come in traditional wooden construction and glass fibre. It is a substantially built boat and heavier than say an Enterprise but this gives it stability. The GP 14 is a two-person boat with a spinnaker, a mainsail, and a large foresail.
Class Captain: Mandy Mitchell

LASER
The Laser is one of the most popular boats in the world and an established Olympic class.
This does not mean they are difficult to sail, there are three sizes of mainsail to suit a range of body weights and abilities.
Class Captain: TBC

MIRACLE
The Miracle was developed from the Mirror. It is longer and has a more efficient and simple mast rig. The Miracle is especially suitable for two teenagers or an adult and young crew such as a daughter or son. Like some of the other boats it is available in wood or glass fibre construction.
Class Captain: TBC

MIRRORThe Mirror is probably one of the most popular small boats in the world. Like the MINI, everyone has owned a Mirror. Originally constructed from single panels of marine plywood as a DIY project and sponsored by the Daily Mirror, the class caters for everyone from beginners to the most competitive of young developing sailors.
Prices range from a hundred pounds or less up to thousands for a competitive winning boat. The latest hulls are available in glass fibre.

RS 200
The RS 200 is a modern boat incorporating the latest ideas on hull design and rigging. It particularly appeals to sailors who have prior experience of performance dinghies. The large asymmetrical spinnaker gives the crew plenty to do and provides exhilarating performance.
Class Captain: Steve Vandersteen

TOPPER
The Topper is a small single-handed boat primarily for young people. It is perfect as an introduction to racing and as a teaching boat. The hull is moulded from plastic and the rig is a simple single sail. There are lots of Toppers being sailed at clubs around the country so it should be easy to find one. WFSC have club-owned Toppers for training and hire.

Facilities

The Clubhouse
The Clubhouse was opened in 1990 and operates as the centre of club activity. The two-storey building houses a galley and dining area, bar with spectator lounge, spacious changing rooms with showers and the club office. The immediate outside area has a large patio space with seating that gives an unobstructed view of the lake.

The Bar and Galley
The Galley is open all day throughout the racing season and serves a variety of lunches at very reasonable prices. Salads, pasta and sandwiches are staple on the menu but to any die-hard Winsford Flasher there is only one meal: pie and beans!

After racing members can retreat to the bar to drown their sorrows or toast their triumphs. Our Quartermaster takes great pride in stocking an extensive range of drinks including some more unusual bottled fine ales. The bar is open throughout the race season and also the summer series.

General

Winsford Flash Sailing Club is situated in the heart of Cheshire, just south of the town of Winsford. The Flash itself is a 90-acre lake situated in rural surroundings by the River Weaver.

The object of the club is to encourage dinghy sailing at all levels. Members need not own boats nor have previous sailing experience. We aim to generate a friendly family atmosphere in which members of all abilities and ages are welcome. The club has a good competitive sailing record and offers keen but friendly competition for all levels of proficiency.

Race Season
Organised racing takes place every Sunday between mid-March and late October with races commencing at midday.

During the summer months the club opens on Wednesday evenings for informal racing and training, partly with the aim of helping members to acquire tactical skills. A short winter handicap series for the brave and hardy is held over six Sundays, starting in mid-November.

Members can sail from the club land throughout the week as well as at weekends, but clubhouse and rescue services are normally only available when there is organised racing, so members are advised not to sail unless there is another boat or person within hailing distance.

For information on the classes of boat we sail please click here.

Members
Winsford Flash Sailing Club is organised and maintained by its members. It operates under a volunteer system in which members participate in such duties as race management, race safety and galley help. This policy is essential to ensure the club is run efficiently and safely, and also aids in keeping subscription levels reasonable.

Joining Winsford Flash Sailing Club
Applications to join need to be proposed and seconded by club members. In line with Club Rules, applications for membership are considered at General Committee meetings which are usually held monthly. During the "waiting period" applicants may sail – provided they have the necessary insurance – but will not become members until the General Committee approves their application. Application forms can be obtained from the Club Secretary, Helen Walsh (01606 551344).

Prospective members are invited to have an informal chat with an executive Committee Member, who will explain the rules and also provide a point of contact.

Membership Fees and Subscriptions
For New Members, a one-off, non returnable entrance fee is payable for each family member over 18 years of age. Entrance fees are not required for members under 18.

Full membership is usually for individuals.

Junior membership is for persons between 8 and 19 who join independently.

Family membership includes all the members of a family (including children under 19) usually but not necessarily residing at the same address.

Non-racing membership is for those who want to sail occasionally for pleasure or to gain experience but do not want to race (this is subject to some restrictions when racing is taking place).

Non-sailing membership is mainly for those members who do not wish to sail but are interested in sailing and want to enjoy the facilities of the club.

Berthing FeesFor each boat kept club during the Sailing Season, a berthing fee of £30 is also payable (£20 for a Topper or Optimist).

Working Party Levies
In order to maintain the Clubhouse, Grounds and Jetties to a high standard while keeping membership subscriptions as low as possible, most of the maintenance and renewal work is undertaken by members. Five days (two pre-sailing season, one in the summer and two post-sailing season) are set aside each year as official working party days.

For each Full Member, Non-Racing Member or Family Member aged 20 to 64 inclusive who does not attend any working parties during the previous year, a levy of £60 is payable (the levy is per household not per individual family member). Provided one Working Party is attended, the levy is reduced to £30. If two or more Working Parties are attended, the levy is reduced to zero.

Working Party ‘Vouchers’ are issued at the Working Parties and these must be submitted with the following year’s subscription.

Working Party Levies are not payable during a member’s first year of membership. Additionally, where a new member joins the Club after the end of March, only one Working Party voucher is required with the following year’s subscription.
